Raja Ram Mohan Roy was known for his efforts to establish the abolishment of the practice of sati, the Hindu funeral practice in which the widow was compelled to sacrifice herself in her husband’s funeral pyre in some parts of Bengal. It was largely due to his efforts that the practice of Sati was banned by the British in 1829.

Raja Ram Mohan Roy first introduced the term ‘Hinduism’ into English language in 1816.

Raja Ram Mohan Roy co-founded the Calcutta Unitarian Society.

Roy was married three times. As a custom during those days, he was married as a child. When his child-bride died, he was married again. His second wife too passed away in 1824. His third wife Uma Devi outlived him.

In 1815 Roy founded Atmiya Sabha to propagate his doctrines of monotheistic Hinduism. Atmiya Sabha used to publish a weekly called ”Bengal Gazette’, a news paper in Persian called ‘Miratul-Akbar’ and a Bengali weekly called ‘Sambad Kaumudi’.
