Aruna Asaf Ali is widely remembered for hoisting the Indian National Congress flag at the Gowalia Tank maidan in Bombay during the Quit India Movement, 1942.

Before joining the Independence movement, Aruna Asaf Ali worked as a teacher and taught at the Gokhale Memorial School in Kolkata.

Aruna was dubbed the Heroine of the 1942 movement for her bravery in the face of danger and was called Grand Old Lady of the Independence movement in her later years.

Aruna Asaf Ali became Delhi’s first mayor in 1958.
